So we’ve apparently reached a point where we can consider the “Infinity Blade style” a thing now. For better or worse the game has changed the face of iOS gaming and there’s going to be a lot of imitators. Some, like Avengers Initiative or Dark Meadow, have been fairly successful.
And on the other end of the spectrum we have games like Power Rangers: Legends, which is a shallow, boring experience.

In Power Rangers: Legends you play as the spandex clad space-warriors as they defend the Earth from the evil Lord Zedd and Goldar. If those names don’t mean anything to you, don’t fret.
Since Legends doesn’t even make the slightest attempt to do anything interesting with the property, it hardly makes any difference who the villains or heroes are.

Like putty in your hands.
The Power Rangers Legends game plays pretty much exactly like Infinity Blade.
You have buttons for dodging, blocking and special attacks and you swipe on the screen to perform moves like attacking and parrying. The main problem here is that the combat is so dull and the controls so bad that making any kind of progress is going to be a frustrating combination of luck and sheer perseverance.
The buttons are barely responsive and the game seems to register our swipes for attacking on a seemingly random basis.
Even if the buttons worked well, it really wouldn’t make a difference as combat is just beyond boring. A typical battle goes like this: your enemy appears on screen and stands around for a while, kind of swaying back and forth like he’s drunk.
When he decides to do something, the attacks come so slowly that you’d swear you were fighting under water. The funny thing is that since the controls are such a disaster, even enemies moving in slow-motion can be shockingly deadly. There are special attacks and power moves available but they rarely add anything to the coma inducing skirmishes you’ll be putting yourself through.

Power Rangers also crashes on a fairly regular basis.
We played the game on both an iPhone 4S and iPad2, and the game would quit on us quite often.
When power house games like Infinity Blade 2 can be played with no trouble at all for hours on end, Legends has no excuse for being so buggy. It also has really long load times, and since you’ll be dying a lot, you’ll be waiting quite a while to get back in the fray.

There are plenty of things you can do in Notifications on your iPhone and iPad, but one of the best things you can do to eliminate constant distractions isn’to kill all notifications.
By doing that you wind up creating a whole ton of uncertainty on your mobile devices, which can actually distract you more.

Notifications aren’t evil. They don’t steal your time as much as you’d like to think because they come and go. and then Notifications. After that, check each app that you’ve given access to Notifications and use the slider to turn badges off. It’s as simple as that. No more red badges staring you in the face. You’ll still get any notifications you deem essential, but they won’t distract you nearly as much.
(For Mail you’ll have to go in a bit deeper, but you can disable badges for every mail account you’ve got set up once you do – even VIP emails.)

You could go a step further and kill all sounds, but this one simple thing is the single best thing you can do to boost your productivity on your iPhone or iPad.

Now I know what you’re thinking:
“Kill all badges? Really?! Are you sure?”
And my answer is: yes.

But if you’re not ready to jump into the deep end, then here are the 3 apps I recommend you keep active and the 3 app I recommend you absolutely
turn off.
Keep badges on for these apps:
Phone. That way you know if you missed a call.
Messages. Same idea here. (Both of these communication methods are meant for instant connection, so that’s why keeping them on is more acceptable than say, Mail.)
Your Task Management App. This will keep you from missing any appointments or important tasks for the day (although if you create a habit of checking this first thing in the morning then the badge could be considered redundant.)
Turn badges off for these apps: Mail. It’s not at all necessary to have this staring you in the face every time you have an unread email in your inbox.
Game Center. This takes you away from the work you need to be doing on the device.
Social Networking Apps. Same as above.

You take on the role of a TSA agent, tasked with preventing dangerous objects from being smuggled aboard an airplane. Using a full body scanner, you are able to screen potential passengers for hidden objects, which appear as red or green. You use your finger to swipe red items away while avoiding contact with the safe and approved green items. You can drag your finger around the screen to collect multiple red items at once, creating combos to drive up your score.
While you hold the banned items, a timer counts down. You have to flick the stash away before the time expires or risk losing the points you’ve accumulated from the group. Tossing the items and catching them again will reset your timer, allowing you to continue to collect more items and build upon your combo. Each red item allowed through, or green item accidentally touched, will cost you one of your three lives. Gameplay is wave-based, with a set number of passengers attempting to board each plane. Subsequent flights will apply an increasing point multiplier, creating the opportunity for better scores the longer you survive.

Your run ends once the third life is lost, and coins will be awarded to you based on your performance. These coins can be used to purchase one-time or persistent power-ups, giving you the ability to start at a more advanced plane on the next attempt, increase the length of the countdown timer, and much more. During the course of play, you’ll also encounter some bonuses within the scanner, such as magnets that attract red items and suitcases that speed up or slow down the passengers moving through the machine. You can even pick up an extra life to cancel out a previous mistake. A series of challenging missions are also always available, asking you to complete tasks like tossing 20 items, surviving for 120 seconds, reaching the fourth plane, and more. Completion of these missions will also increase your coin total and provide you with fun tasks to keep gameplay from getting stale. Joining a Team Battle will also add the benefit of bonus coins and give you a community-based experience while you play.

Graphically, Funky Smugglers has a fun and stylish look, infused with a good dose of humor. The character types of the passengers are varied, and the objects that they try to smuggle in can be a bit off-beat (spiders, chainsaws, pliers, etc.). Animations are smooth and predictable, though avoiding green items held in swinging arms can prove to be quite challenging as you progress. The soundtrack is worth the price of admission alone, dropping some funky beats to keep your head bobbin’ while you play. Controls are dead simple to use, requiring you to drag over items to collect them and give a hearty flick to throw them away. We found them to be adequately responsive, with good collision detection.

Replay value is very good, as the opportunity to set new high scores is ever-present. Completing missions and helping out in the Team Battles can also provide incentive to keep playing. GameCenter integration provides leaderboards and an achievement system, too. A universal app for a mere $0.99, Funky Smugglers earns a 4.5-Dimple seal of approval.

Lots of strategy; worker placement “algorithm” works well for computer play Useless tutorial; no asynchronous multiplayer; interface obscures important information Dominant Species is a good game stuffed into a box that’s too small for it.
Mother Nature may be red in tooth and claw, but that doesn't mean she can't enjoy a good strategy game every once in a while. That means Dominant Species should be right up her alley, assuming she can figure out how the game works.
Dominant Species is an iPad conversion of a strategy board game published by GMT Games. It depicts Earth shortly before the last Ice Age, with arachnids, insects, amphibians, birds, reptiles, and mammals competing to survive and prosper as glaciation overtakes the land.
It's a nasty, brutal struggle of... well, of placing pawns, moving little cubes around in hexes, and drawing cards. The game is a little abstract that way. In the board game world, Dominant Species is known as a "worker placement" game. You have six pawns, which you use to choose the six actions you want to do during the round. Each action is a simple event within the game, such as adding a food source to the board or scoring points. You have many more choices than you have pawns, and you can do the same action more than once if you like.

Worker placement games work a lot like computer programs, with the players calling the subroutines that will help them to score the most points and win the game. This makes worker placement games easy to adapt into computer games, but it also makes playing the game feel a lot like programming a computer.
In the case of Dominant Species, playing the game feels a lot like programming a computer without a reference manual. The rules are not difficult, but the tutorial does almost nothing to help you learn them. It shows you how to place your pawns and move your creature pieces, but it never tells you how the different game events work, or why you should choose them. You learn a little bit about the mechanics and nothing about the strategy, which means you're likely to spend your first game flailing around and wondering why you’re losing.
The only way to really learn the game -- assuming you don't have a friend to teach it to you -- is to read through a long and sometimes opaque manual. You’ll find the most important part (what the various events you can choose actually do) several clicks deep.

If you squint hard, you can pretend they're ripping each others' heads off
The game also hides important information in the menus at the upper left corner of the screen. This isn't a fatal flaw, but it's a big difference from other board game conversions like Ticket to Ride, which makes sure that everything you need to know is right there on the main screen.
Once you've learned the game, you'll appreciate the strategies that are available. There are many ways to win, and each type of creature has its own subtle strong points.
On the other hand, you'll also notice more little flaws. Once you've started taking an action, for instance, you can't undo or cancel it. That’s inexcusable in a game that can be lost with one misplaced tap.
The lack of asynchronous online multiplayer also limits the game's long-term appeal, though that would be a difficult feature to implement given the game's structure.
Dominant Species is not a bad game. In fact, it's a very good game. But it’s difficult to learn and presents a lot of information crammed into a counter-intuitive interface. If Mother Nature ever does play this game, let's hope she's not easily confused, or that she's in a forgiving mood.
After all, it's not nice to fool with Mother Nature's strategy gaming...
