National Rifle Association Releases Shooting Game

The National Rifle Association has released an iOS game called NRA: Practice Range. It’s a free target shooting app that features a variety of real guns. You can unlock more guns for a buck apiece via in-app purchase. The game’s release is surprising, because the video game industry is one of the groups the NRA has blamed for real-life violence.

NRA: Practice Range is a very barebones target practice app that lets you shoot in three modes: Indoor Range, Outdoor Range, and Skeet Shoot.
The controls are handled either using the gyroscope or an analog stick. Neither work well, leaving you with floaty-feeling controls. If you’re looking for a target practice game, you’d be much better off downloading something like Bullseye Factory or even Can Knockdown 2.

The loading screens are stocked with facts and tips like: “Gun Safety Tip #4: Know your target and what is behind it.”
There’s also an information section that sends you to the NRA website for pages related to gun safety, NRA news, and the like.
It’s ironic that the NRA has released a video game, because games– along with music videos and movies– are where the NRA has laid the blame for real-life violence. In a statement on the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut last month, NRA president Wayne LaPierre made the following statement:

And here’s another dirty little truth that the media try their best to conceal: There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people, through vicious, violent video games with names like Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat and Splatterhouse.

Arc Squadron iPhone game Review

Some of the best graphics you’ll ever see for iOS; butter smooth controls; huge campaign with lots of bonus levels; engrossing, vivid and addicting gameplay; ample ways to customize and upgrade your ship We haven’t heard about a sequel yet There are no two ways about this. Everyone needs to play Arc Squadron, and they need to play it now.
It’s always kind of thrilling to see a company knock it out of the park with their debut title on a platform. Psyonix Games-- contributors to console title like Homefront and Bulletstorm-- have released Arc Squadron, a gorgeous and intense new game for iOS that is exactly the kind of game that you would expect from a company that’s helped shape exciting and beautiful games in the past.
Arc Squadron falls very much into the same camp as games like StarFox. But here your nameless pilot presumably has far less hair and you don’t fly with teammates. You play as a space pilot (he/she actually doesn’t have a name and is only ever called pilot), who is a member of an elite flying unit. A malevolent race known as the Guardians is laying waste to the universe, and it’s your job to stop them. You’ll race through a massive campaign consisting of 64 levels, flying a bunch of different ships that wield a whole host of devastating weapons.

The iceman cometh.
If you’ve played games like Icarus-X or any of the Cave games like DoDonPachi Blissful Death, then you'll feel right at home with Arc Squadron’s controls. You move your ship by sliding your finger across the screen, and you can do barrel-rolls by quickly sliding your finger to one side. The game does the shooting for you, with the exception of secondary weapons, which you fire by tapping your finger on an enemy. The controls work remarkably well. The only times we had problems were when barrel-rolls didn’t go off as planned, or went off when we didn’t want them to. Other than those small inconveniences, the controls are so smooth that eventually your ship will feel like it’s merely an extension of your mind.
The game's 64 levels offer plenty to fight through, with boss battles scattered throughout. The levels are a lot of fun and the battles are intense, with devious enemy ships and traps that all have different kinds of attacks and require various tactics to work around. The boss battles are probably the most fun part of the game. The Guardians are huge, usually taking up the entire screen, and they all have bizarre, almost manga-like looks and fighting styles that will keep you guessing. Our favorite had to be “Clock Block”, which is essentially a flying, Victorian clock that shoots gears and laser beams at your ship. You think you’ve seen everything until a giant space-clock destroys an advanced fighting ship by hurling huge pendulums towards the screen.

Try not to scratch the wings.
There are also challenge levels that are usually spaced out between the actual campaign levels. These are designed to be pure tests of skill. Some of them start you off with little to no health in an attempt to see how long you can survive against an onslaught of enemies, while others offer mere target practice. Still others are endless levels, where you have to fly for as long as you can while avoiding spinning blades of death and hangar doors which can close on you from random directions. These are a blast to play, and you can play through them again and again, honing your skills each time.
Between levels you can go to the hangar bay, where you can buy all kinds of goodies for your ship. There are a bunch of secondary weapons for you to buy, our favorite being the chain-lightning gun, which you can also upgrade to make more powerful and have shorter recharge times. You can also buy different paint jobs for your ship (and there are a lot to choose from) and better and more powerful ships as well.

We definitely should've taken the toll road.
You start the game with a ship that was essentially cobbled together from spare parts, but eventually you can buy more advanced ships all the way up to one that was reverse-engineered from alien technology. You gain money (or Arc bucks) by finishing levels or accomplishing goals, and you can also spend real-world dough to get even more credits. But you accrue credits at such an accelerated rate that only the most impatient players will feel the need to plunk down any actual cash.
Arc Squadron is a revelation. It’s a game that truly exemplifies what can really be done on iOS if you’re willing to push the devices. We didn’t even mention the absolutely gorgeous graphics, which are some of the very best we’ve ever seen on iOS. And if we didn’t mention the spectacular visuals, then you know the actual gameplay has got to be amazing. This is one of the best, most refined gaming experiences you’ll ever have on your little phone or iPad. Arc Squadron is a Must Have for everyone. We can’t think of a single soul who would be disappointed by playing this space shooter.

You take on the role of a TSA agent, tasked with preventing dangerous objects from being smuggled aboard an airplane. Using a full body scanner, you are able to screen potential passengers for hidden objects, which appear as red or green. You use your finger to swipe red items away while avoiding contact with the safe and approved green items. You can drag your finger around the screen to collect multiple red items at once, creating combos to drive up your score.
While you hold the banned items, a timer counts down. You have to flick the stash away before the time expires or risk losing the points you’ve accumulated from the group. Tossing the items and catching them again will reset your timer, allowing you to continue to collect more items and build upon your combo. Each red item allowed through, or green item accidentally touched, will cost you one of your three lives. Gameplay is wave-based, with a set number of passengers attempting to board each plane. Subsequent flights will apply an increasing point multiplier, creating the opportunity for better scores the longer you survive.

Your run ends once the third life is lost, and coins will be awarded to you based on your performance. These coins can be used to purchase one-time or persistent power-ups, giving you the ability to start at a more advanced plane on the next attempt, increase the length of the countdown timer, and much more. During the course of play, you’ll also encounter some bonuses within the scanner, such as magnets that attract red items and suitcases that speed up or slow down the passengers moving through the machine. You can even pick up an extra life to cancel out a previous mistake. A series of challenging missions are also always available, asking you to complete tasks like tossing 20 items, surviving for 120 seconds, reaching the fourth plane, and more. Completion of these missions will also increase your coin total and provide you with fun tasks to keep gameplay from getting stale. Joining a Team Battle will also add the benefit of bonus coins and give you a community-based experience while you play.

Graphically, Funky Smugglers has a fun and stylish look, infused with a good dose of humor. The character types of the passengers are varied, and the objects that they try to smuggle in can be a bit off-beat (spiders, chainsaws, pliers, etc.). Animations are smooth and predictable, though avoiding green items held in swinging arms can prove to be quite challenging as you progress. The soundtrack is worth the price of admission alone, dropping some funky beats to keep your head bobbin’ while you play. Controls are dead simple to use, requiring you to drag over items to collect them and give a hearty flick to throw them away. We found them to be adequately responsive, with good collision detection.

Replay value is very good, as the opportunity to set new high scores is ever-present. Completing missions and helping out in the Team Battles can also provide incentive to keep playing. GameCenter integration provides leaderboards and an achievement system, too. A universal app for a mere $0.99, Funky Smugglers earns a 4.5-Dimple seal of approval.

Devil’s Attorney, a turn-based strategy game with a litigious theme, has been released by 1337 Game Design and is now available from the app store. Chock full of humor and RPGish elements, Devil’s Attorney is cleverly entertaining and a real treat for mobile gamers.

Devil’s Attorney Review Pros:

• Polished cartoon presentation with a great courtroom vibe; influenced by ’80s style and packed with humor
• Soundtrack is outstanding, intro song is infectious, and voice work is terrific
• Controls are simple to use
• RPG elements add great depth

Devil’s Attorney Review Cons:

• Love the game, but hate the name
• At times, it feels a little too easy, but the experience trumps the challenge

The attorney in question is Max McMann, a charismatic defense attorney charged with helping his clients beat the system and regain their freedom after they find themselves in all manner of hot water with the law. Whereas most turn-based strategy games take a shoot-first, ask-questions-later approach, Devil’s Attorney takes a more cerebral, questions-only approach as you launch judicial-specific attacks (interrogating the witness, tampering with evidence, epic speech, etc.) to wear down the prosecution’s case and take advantage of justice’s blind eye. Additionally, you can make moves that strengthen your own case or mitigate the damage caused by your opponents. Cases play out over the course of several rounds, starting you with 9 Action Points to purchase the tactics needed to poke holes in the opposition’s case, eliminating pesky witnesses, damning evidence, and slimy lawyers one by one.
 Once you’ve used up your AP, the prosecution inflicts damage to your case. You go back-and-forth until one side claims victory. If you win, your client gets off and you receive a tidy sum of money for your troubles (including bonuses for quick dismissal), which you can use to purchase new duds or swanky items for your apartment. After all, that’s what it’s all about, right? These living quarter upgrades and personal improvements give you new skills to use as you battle it out in front of the bench for subsequent scofflaws. Personal gifts also enhance the tactics you’ve already acquired.

Graphically, the cartoony presentation is terrific, clean and appealing. Your tactics appear in a scrollable list on the left half of the screen, with a short explanation of each item’s effect and the number of Action Points required to use it. Your AP total is at the screen bottom, and your case strength appears at the screen top. The opposition is listed on the right half of the screen, with credibility ratings at the left of each item and a damage indicator listed underneath.
If you can reduce the credibility to zero, they drop out and bring you one step closer to winning. Reduction of damage and the elimination of damage enhancers is key to swift victory. There is little animation other than some funny cut scenes with goofy banter between McMann and the prosecutors.
The soundtrack is catchy and the voice work is outstanding. The intro song is a major highlight and a bear to get out of your head once you’ve heard it. Humor is plentiful, providing levity and quirkiness that permeate throughout the game. Controls require you to tap on a tactic to select it, then tap on a prosecutor, witness, or piece of evidence to attack it.  A small pop-up indicates how much damage is inflicted, as most attacks have a value range that’s broad enough that you never know whether or not an attack with have a significant effect or not.

Replay value is somewhat low, as there really isn’t any need to replay cases that you’ve already won, nor does there appear to be any way to go back and do so. There are a ton of cases to work through, and deciding which upgrades to pursue and which gifts and accessories to accept can create varying experiences that should bring you back for more. It’s a surprisingly deep, superbly polished, and devastatingly addictive game that took us by surprise. A universal app for $2.99, Devil’s Attorney is a fantastic 5-Dimple stud.

Punch Quest Review Pros:

Punch Quest Review Cons:

• Difficult to string together lengthy punch chains
• Getting into double digit levels has proved challenging

Punch Quest has a distinctly Jetpack Joyride-like vibe, from its opening moments where the protagonist bursts through a wall and takes out a group of skeletons to the various quests available to complete to its loot-collecting focus that allows you to purchase various skills and apparel.
However, Punch Quest goes above and beyond, throwing a ton of crazy stuff at you and offering a three-tiered skill system that directly affects the way you play the game. As you progress, you fill a bar with three distinct thresholds along the screen bottom. As you hit each threshold, you activate your equipped Level 1 power, Level 2 power, or Super Move.
These skills range from a blocking defense mechanism to extended fighting range to temporary invincibility and much more. You purchase these skills with money earned during gameplay, which is doled our generously. Prices of items are kept low enough that you’ll be able to purchase new things without a great deal of grinding or the need to turn to IAP. Persistent upgrades and one-time boosts can also be purchased.

Additionally, there is a great variety of enemy types to deal with, mini-bosses to fight, and path randomization that allows you to choose different branches that focus on fighting, treasure, eggs, and more. The control scheme for dealing with all of this insanity is kept dead simple.
Tap the button on the left for a leaping uppercut or tap the button on the right for a vicious jab. Stringing together a series of continual punches will increase a multiplier that drives up your score, helping you to level up and earn even more points. You have 5 hearts worth of health, losing a heart for each hit you take.
Certain power-ups or items can add armor to hearts, giving you additional health, in effect. To block, simply hold both buttons at the same time. You can perform slams by tapping the uppercut button while airborne and even string together combo moves by tapping one button after the other. The auto-running has a good sense of speed, though you’ll need to avoid the hesitation brought on by blocking in order to clear some gaps with your uppercut maneuver.

Graphically, Punch Quest utilizes the same retro pixilated look that made Rocketcat’s other games so appealing. Animations are great, with plenty of cool bony explosions and characters sent careening into each other. Enemy types have a distinct look that makes them easy to distinguish from one another as you determine the best course of action to use in dispatching them.
You can customize the protagonist’s hair, skin, armor, and hat colors and styles. The soundtrack is catchy and upbeat, adding to the overall presentation. Replay value is off the chain, as we can’t seem to put it down. The fantastic action, collectible skills and upgrades, loads of quests, customization options, and ridiculously fun scenarios make this a must-have offering. At the goes-down-easy price of FREE (very optional IAPs only), Punch Quest is a knockout 5-Dimple experience.
